Atelier St James creates bespoke outerwear in London for clients who want a jacket designed around how they dress, travel and live.
From leather and suede to technical cloth, the material, cut and construction are selected for the finished garment and its intended use. Every jacket is individually patterned and refined through fittings before completion.

CONSULTATION: STARTING WITH HOW YOU DRESS
Bespoke Outerwear Begins with Its Purpose
Outerwear can serve different roles within the wardrobe, from daily city wear to travel, weekends and seasonal use. Establishing that purpose from the outset informs the decisions that follow.
Your first appointment is a conversation about what you need. We discuss your usual way of dressing, the fit you feel comfortable in and the layers you are likely to wear with the jacket. Length, weight and warmth all come into the discussion before measurements are taken.
A bespoke bomber jacket needs a different balance from a longer field jacket. One may be worn over a shirt, while another needs room for knitwear. The jacket begins with its purpose, rather than a standard shape that every client must follow.

MATERIAL: CHOOSING FOR FEEL AND FUNCTION
Leather, Suede and Technical Cloth
Leather, suede and technical cloth each behave differently when worn. That affects how the jacket is cut, constructed and finished.
With a bespoke leather jacket, the hide needs to suit the cut. A softer leather may work well for an easy, relaxed shape. A firmer option can give the jacket more structure. The decision depends on the piece being commissioned and how the client expects to wear it.
A bespoke suede jacket has a more relaxed character, both in appearance and in the way the material feels. It may be kept relaxed or given a cleaner line, depending on the garment's style. Technical cloth has another role, particularly when the jacket needs to work through changing weather or frequent travel.
We choose the material with the finished jacket in mind. How it feels, how it wears and where it will be used all matter.

DESIGN: FINDING THE RIGHT FORM
Bespoke Bomber Jackets and Luxury Outerwear
Each outerwear style has its own considered proportions. A bomber has a distinct silhouette, while leather behaves differently and a lighter technical jacket may call for less structure.
We start with the shape and build from there. Length, collar, pockets and hardware are discussed as the design comes together. Details are introduced where they serve the function and character of the jacket. If a detail has no place on the jacket, we leave it out.
How the jacket will be worn matters too. One client may want a clean, pared-back piece. Another may need useful pockets or more room underneath for colder days. Those choices are worked into the design from the start.
That is our approach to luxury outerwear. The jacket should have what it needs, without carrying anything it does not.

CLOTH: MADE FOR CHANGING CONDITIONS
Technical Cloth with a Tailored ApproacH
A jacket worn in London can see several kinds of weather in one day. A cold morning may give way to a milder afternoon, with rain somewhere in between. The cloth needs to make sense for all of it.
We ask where and when you expect to wear the jacket. It might be for daily use in the city, regular travel or colder months. We also consider what you are likely to wear underneath. This helps settle the weight, lining and choice of cloth.
For winter, a cashmere-lined jacket can provide extra warmth without making it unnecessarily heavy. A lighter technical cloth may be more useful for travel or for a piece worn at different times of the year.
With bespoke outerwear, cloth is chosen with everyday use in mind. It needs to suit the conditions, sit comfortably with the clothes worn beneath it, and make sense for how the jacket will be used.

FITTING: REFINING THE JACKET
A Fit That Works in Motion
The fit needs to remain comfortable as the jacket moves with you. That is why we fit it with the clothes you are likely to wear underneath. A shirt needs less room than heavy knitwear, while a jacket worn over tailoring needs more space through the body.
We also account for the material itself. Leather will soften with time. A bomber needs room through the body without becoming too loose. Technical cloth can sit differently across the shoulders and sleeves.
At each fitting, we see what works and what does not. A sleeve may need adjusting. The body may need more room for layering. We make those changes before the jacket is finished, so it feels comfortable in your everyday wardrobe.
