THE BESPOKE PROCESS
Custom Tailoring London at Atelier St James
Atelier St James provides custom tailoring London for those who value exceptional fit, refined craftsmanship and a truly personal experience. Every commission begins with a private consultation before progressing through cloth selection, individual pattern cutting and a series of fittings. Each stage is carefully considered, resulting in a garment created exclusively for you and the way you choose to wear it.
01
CONSULTATION: WHERE THE COMMISSION BEGINS
The First Appointment
Every custom tailoring London commission begins with a conversation. Before any fabric is chosen or measurements taken, we want to understand what you're having made, where you'll wear it, and how you like a garment to fit.
Each suit serves a different purpose within the wardrobe. One worn throughout the week has different demands from one intended for evenings, travel or more formal occasions. We use this appointment to draw out those distinctions early, so the cloth, the cut and the overall character of the garment are right from the outset.
By the time this first meeting ends, we've formed a clear sense of the garment you need, not just the one you've described.
02
DESIGN: CLOTH, CUT AND CHARACTER
Cloth affects how a garment hangs, feels and wears. Weight matters. So do texture, colour and the season in which the piece will be worn.
When selecting cloth, we consider these practical points alongside your preferences. We then look at shape, lapels, pockets, lining and other details. Each choice should work with the garment as a whole. Each detail should have a clear purpose within the finished garment.
03
CUTTING: WHERE THE SHAPE BEGINS
A Pattern Cut for One Person
Once the design is agreed upon, your measurements are used to create an individual paper pattern. This gives the garment its starting shape.
The cloth is then cut and prepared for construction. As the commission progresses, the pattern can be adjusted based on what we learn during later fittings.
This is central to hand-cut tailoring. Rather than starting with a standard size, the shape develops around the person who will wear it.
04
FITTING: REFINING THE FORM
Fittings That Shape the Garment
Measurements provide the starting point. A fitting shows us how the piece actually sits and moves.
We can then review the shoulder, length, balance and overall line together. Where changes are needed, they are marked before work continues. These fitting appointments are part of making the garment, not simply a check at the end.
The number required may vary. The garment itself helps determine what comes next.
